Well its been a long, great season & its all come down to this, Nashville vs San Jose in the finals
San Jose upset New Jersey in 6, the presidents trophy winners just weren't themselves in this matchup, and couldn't battle the playoff pressures with hard hitting rough hockey being a huge contributing factor in San Jose's victories. They have been great these playoffs, lead by Marleau, Cheechoo, Spezza & a hard hitting defensive core & Toskala at the helm in goal this team looks to intimidate the opposition and is the best in the league at doing it. There has never been a team in the VNHL that hits & plays as tough as these San Jose Sharks play, and they hope to strike fear into their opponents when they head into Nashville for game 1 of the finals.
Nashville on the other hand, a team with a more of a European style play, they haven't made any acquisitions all season wrong, and have felt since the off season this is the team that will win them the cup. A couple hiccups in the regular season was disappointing to the Nashville faithful but come playoff time the team has really pulled things together. With Kariya's experience, he is leading this team through the playoffs & has done a great job helping the youth on the team handle the playoff atmosphere. Meanwhile, its a youngster himself who has stepped up & played a huge unexpected role in the teams success thus far, Scott Hartnell is leading the team in playoff points thus far & is the set up man to Kariya, feeding him the puck for 4 goals in the series vs Vancouver. Vokoun has been extremely impressive in goal for the team, giving them the balance they need for the possession style of hockey they play; Vokoun had a shutout in the sweep vs Vancouver & has only a 1.30 GAA thus far in the off season. They say steller goal tending wins cups, and if Vokoun continues to play this way, that statement could hold true.
So its the hard hitting, run & gun San Jose Sharks against the speedy, agile, possession team in the Nashville Predators. Both are in their first VNHL Finals; and have proved their worth defeating the top 2 teams from the regular season, and the 2 teams who had all the odds in their favor to be in the finals. Very few expected either of these teams to reach this point, let alone both! This lines up an extremely exciting match up, reminds me of the summit series with the hard hitting Canadians & the Russians. In that series the Canadians heald strong to win 4 games to 3; we can only hope this series will have such drama & excitement, but it boads well for these teams & the future of the league either way.
On whats been exciting playoffs, I'm TheMainEvent wishing good luck to both teams in the finals and a congradulations to New Jersey & Vancouver on excellent seasons. Good night!
